Damewanami, a lecturer at a state-owned university in Meghalaya, started cultivating Lakadong turmeric in 2016 purely as a hobby at his family-owned farms. The total land holding of about 2 hectares, comprising small to medium-sized home gardens.
Practicing indigenous methods of cultivation that include no use of pesticides or chemical fertilsers, other crops grown on his farm include corn and beans.
Most of the workforce found at their family farms are women from diverse backgrounds who meticulously craft the harvest, while enjoying financial independence as a fruit of their labour.
Over the years, as he learned more about turmeric cultivation and the yields went up, Damewanami had a strong desire to share his produce with consumers across the country and the world.
He now travels throughout India to showcase his produce while educating people involved in the food industry about the benefits of Lakadong turmeric.
